What is the procedure for IVF treatment in India?

IVF is one of the miracles of reproductive sciences and has helped millions of childless couples to become proud parents. IVF or in-vitro fertilization is one of the most effective and popular assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatments available.

In this procedure, the egg is brought together with sperm for fertilization in vitro or in a jar. After the zygote or fertilized egg has undergone embryo culture for 2-6 days, it is carefully implanted into the uterus of the biological mother or surrogate mother. Here, we shall look at the complete procedure for IVF treatment in India, along with the things that you should keep in mind while opting for IVF treatment.

What is IVF treatment?

IVF treatment is a part of assisted reproductive technology that is mainly used to treat infertility. Some of the other common ART treatments include ovulation induction, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, gamete intrafallopian transfer, zygote intrafallopian transfer. The main goal of IVF and other kinds of ART treatments is to provide safe and affordable medical care to couples to increase the chances of being parents.

What are the steps involved in IVF treatment?

There are several steps involved in IVF treatment. Here's a look at the major steps:

  1. Synthetic hormones are injected to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs.
  2. Usually, ovarian stimulation lasts one to two weeks before the eggs can be retrieved.
  3. The eggs are retrieved 34-36 hours after the last injection and before ovulation beings
  4. Oocytes are retrieved by transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. Painkillers are administered to the patient.
  5. The sperm is collected from the intended father. It is desirable that the sperm sample is obtained by masturbation.
  6. Fertilization can be attempted in two common ways: conventional insemination and intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
  7. In the conventional method, sperm and eggs are mixed and incubated overnight. In the other method, a single sperm is inserted directly into a mature egg.
  8. In certain situations, your doctor might recommend certain other procedures before embryo transfer: Assisted hatching and preimplantation genetic testing.
  9. About five to six weeks after fertilization the embryo hatches i.e., it separates from the surrounding membrane and attaches to the lining of the uterus. In some cases, an embryo is allowed to develop in an incubator before being removed for being tested for specific genetic diseases.
  10. Finally, embryo transfer happens at the doctor's office around two to five days after the retrieval of eggs.
  11. After 12 days or two weeks after egg retrieval, the doctor will test a blood sample to determine your pregnancy.

Risks associated with IVF treatment in India?

  1. IVF increases the likelihood of multiple births when more than one embryo is transferred to your uterus.
  2. Premature delivery and low birth weight.
  3. Miscarriage
  4. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
  5. Birth defects
  6. Cancer

However, many of these risks are also associated with pregnancies that are carried out without assistance. If you have any doubts regarding the efficacy of IVF treatment or the risks associated with it, then you should talk to your doctor for consultation.
