What is IUI Treatment?

What is IUI Treatment?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility procedure crafted to enhance the prospects of fertilisation by insemination of processed Semen Sample directly into the woman's uterus. This technique is geared towards maximising the number of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes, thereby augmenting the chances of successful fertilisation. By giving sperm a strategic advantage through direct placement, IUI aims to optimise the natural process of fertilisation. However, it's important to note that while IUI provides sperm with a head start, the ultimate success still hinges on the ability of sperm to independently reach and fertilise the egg.

How Does It Work?

Each IUI treatment is termed ‘cycle’. IUI treatment involves following steps in it’s procedure:

  • Egg production: The ovaries generate eggs for fertilisation through either natural or stimulated cycles. In a natural IUI cycle, no fertility drugs are used. Alternatively, a doctor may administer fertility medication at the start of your period to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs, as women typically release only one egg per month.
  • Day 12 ultrasound: After confirming the lead follicle's size on day 12 ultrasound, the IUI Coordinator will advise you on when to administer the trigger shot for ovulation. The IUI procedure is typically scheduled about 36 hours after the trigger shot. Remember to abstain from ejaculation for at least 24 hours before sperm collection for the IUI.
  • Semen Preparation: Following ovulation, your partner will provide a sperm sample, which undergoes a process known as "washing." This procedure concentrates the most healthy sperms into a smaller volume of fluid.
  • Insemination: During insemination, a thin, long tube called a catheter is inserted through the cervix using a speculum to deliver the concentrated sperm directly into the uterus. While typically painless, some women may experience mild cramping.
  • Pregnancy test: After 14 days from insemination, you can take a home pregnancy test. It's crucial not to test too early, as the "trigger" shot may cause a false positive result.

Benefits of IUI treatment:

There are numerous benefits associated with IUI treatment which are mentioned below:

  • IUI treatment elevates the likelihood of conceiving compared to natural intercourse.
  • There are lesser chances of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
  • IUI treatment follows a natural cycle, which is less intrusive on the body and uterus compared to IVF.
  • It serves as a valuable precursor to gauge the body's response before opting for IVF, potentially avoiding wasted cycles.
  • IUI treatment is more economical than IVF and other fertility treatment alternatives.
When is IUI Recommended?

When is IUI Recommended?

IUI treatment is recommended mostly in the following instances:

  • Mild male factor infertility: When there are minor issues with sperm count, motility, or morphology.
  • Unexplained infertility: When there's no identifiable cause for infertility after basic testing.
  • Cervical factor infertility: When there are problems with cervical mucus that hinder sperm motility.
  • Ovulation disorders: When a woman has irregular or absent ovulation.
  • Endometriosis-related infertility: When endometriosis affects fertility but doesn't necessitate more invasive treatments.
  • Unsuccessful natural conception: After a period of attempt to conceive naturally without success.
